How we report and follow-up

Following each inspection, we publish a report, making sure all our findings are available to the public. We do not print our reports but they can all be downloaded from our website in the inspection reports section.

For all our reports we ensure that the service(s) we inspected get a chance to check the report for any factual inaccuracies. Along with minsters and the press the inspected services will also see an embargoed copy of the report a short time before we publish.

We ensure that stakeholders can access the report on the publication date. We have a subscriber service that you can sign up to and select your preferences for what you receive. We also post about it on Twitter (Twitter link, 255 kB).

After their report is published, Probation services are required to liaise with HM Prisons and Probation Service to agree a draft action plan which will address our recommendations in the report.

For youth offending services, their action plan will be overseen and followed by us.

Any action plans will be used as evidence for the next inspection of that service.

For thematic reports HM Prisons and Probation Service draft an action plan against our recommendations. We log and track the progress made and in some cases may choose to reinspect a particular thematic topic at a later date – being clear about whether progress has been made on our recommendations.
