White Paper on Prison Safety and Reform

Since the publication of the White Paper on Prison safety and reform, we have been working hard to ensure that the role of HMI Prisons is central to efforts to improve outcomes for prisoners. The Chief Inspector has said:

“I welcome any reform that is intended to make prisons safer, more decent and more likely to offer effective rehabilitation. In particular I welcome the proposals to increase the impact of the Inspectorate’s work. Far too often there has been an inadequate response to our findings. The White Paper suggests that this will change, including a key proposal that where the Inspectorate has serious concerns, our work could trigger an intervention by the Secretary of State. It is also reassuring that the independence of the Inspectorate has been recognised. This will be crucial when we come to report on the actual impact of these measures on the treatment and conditions experienced by prisoners.”
