Thematic inspections may look at:

• particular topics in prosecution, such as the handling of certain types of cases (e.g. those involving road traffic fatalities or youth offenders)
• stages in the prosecution process, such as advocacy and presentation of cases in court
• important national issues, such as the introduction of digital working in the criminal justice system

In carrying out  a thematic inspection, HMCPSI will normally visit a number of CPS Areas to obtain a national picture.

We sometimes inspect topics or issues that cut across the criminal justice system, in conjunction with the other criminal justice inspectorates. These inspection reports can be found under joint inspections.
